The war on Christmas is WINNABLE
This makes me optimistic this morning. A secular group in Washington state has managed to muscle their own holiday display next to a nativity scene on the Capitol at Olympia. I approve this message.
"At this season of the Winter Solstice may reason prevail. There are no gods, no devils, no angels, no heaven or hell. There is only our natural world. Religion is but myth and superstition that hardens hearts and enslaves minds."
Amen.

Truth hurts
I don't pretend to fully understand the details of our economic collapse, but to me it seems fundamental to economic health for a country to be able to produce something in order to offset what it consumes from elsewhere. Isn't that at the root of our economic rot. American doesn't make anything. Seriously, if it wasn't for the iPods and Macbooks being used by people across the world, it would literally be nothing.
I don't think there's anything necessarily wrong with a desire to consume. You can argue that its human nature. But look at how we consume. Look at how common flat screen hdtv's are these days. I have one. But who's making them? It's not us/U.S.

Dur...I'm Plaxico Burress...
...and I shot myself in the thigh. I'm a fucking dumbass. Durrrrr.
It's not like he needs either leg to, um, play football or anything.
Seriously, if you're getting paid millions of dollars to play football why are you going to any place where you feel the need to carry a gun? And this is the guy who caught the game-winning catch in the Super Bowl. Damn, I hate the Giants!

Which movies do you find yourself arguing the most about?
So asks The Onion.
I find myself nodding in agreement with the guy who defends A.I. Yes, Spielberg's snot is all over the sappy ending, but he film did a tremendous job at depicting human failings by the ideals we project upon child-rearing. And to top it off, I always felt that creepiness was the intended feeling on this film rather than the film's drawback.
At any rate it's way better than Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull.

Booby trap
Literally
Uganda's police warned male bar-goers to keep their noses clean after a probe found a gang of robbers had been using women with chloroform smeared on their chests to knock their victims unconscious.
On the other hand if the last thing you remember before being robbed is planting your face against a pair of fun bags, then maybe we've found the most pleasurable way to be robbed while being stripped completely bare.

Torture doesn't work
Hope and change! Yes, I am thrilled that Barack Obama was elected president, but I will remain skeptical about his ability to affect real change until I see actual results. There's no doubt that the current occupant of the White House will be leaving behind one giant floater for the Obama administration to flush down the proverbial toilet. In other words, Obama's gonna inherit a lot of problems.
Where to begin? Well ending the Bush legacy of torture would be a good start. This first-hand account by a former interrogator reveals the folly of persuing this policy any further.
I learned in Iraq that the No. 1 reason foreign fighters flocked there to fight were the abuses carried out at Abu Ghraib and Guantanamo. Our policy of torture was directly and swiftly recruiting fighters for al-Qaeda in Iraq.

Why not fire this up again?
It's been a while for me and the blog. Truth be told, I had to scrap this endeavor this summer when I committed myself to taking the LSAT (a day that will be upon me this coming Saturday).
Much has happened to me in recent weeks. Between my father passing away, quitting my job, and tossing all my marbles into getting into law school, to say I feel overwhelmed would be an understatement. Here's hoping that jumping back on the blog will provide some sort of catharsis.
On another personal note, I was thrilled to see this picture taken from my father's cottage in England posted on the Daily Dish.
